Netflix and Disney+ have had a lot of cancellations recently, with both streaming platforms giving up multiple shows. These cancellations include some fan-favorite shows as well as some newer shows. HBO Max may be joining in as well, since the streamer has canceled the Head Of the Class reboot.
According to THR., HBO Max has ended its first season of comedy updates from the sitcom in 1986-91. THR reports that all 10 episodes of the reboot’s premiered on November 4. Although the cancellation is heartbreaking for viewers, it’s interesting not to mention that this is only the second cancelled scripted HBO Max series since its launch in 2020. The other being Generation.
The original Head Of the Class aired for five seasons on ABC. It featured gifted students from the Individualized Honors Program of a Manhattan high-school. Richard Eustis, Michael Elias, and Richard Eustis both created the original series and the reboot.
While it’s unclear why HBO Max chose not to renew the series for a second season. However, it’s never easy to do a reboot of a classic. Although it is possible that they didn’t have enough momentum, the show won’t go away forever.
Netflix and Disney+ were also affected by the cancellations of two shows. The streaming platform also canned a reboot of Turner & Hooch and the coming-of age series Diary of a Future President. Netflix, however, seems to cancel everything. Netflix announced recently that Cowboy Bebop, along with Julie & the Phantoms, will no longer be returning. Fans had been waiting over a decade for any news on this one.
The good news is? The good news? The Sex & the City’s revival, And Just Like That …, just made its debut. Mindy Kaing’s teen drama The Sex Lives of College Girls was also picked up for a second episode.
2021 has seen some very severe cancellations, but also some nice saves. It wouldn’t surprise if another network or streaming platform cancelled before 2022. But, we can hope for a bit more joy and less scrooge as we head into the holiday season.
Head of Class will not return for a second season. However, you can still binge-watch the first season as well as all five episodes of the original series on HBO Max. Keep your fingers crossed that fans are able to get through the next couple weeks without any more negative news.
