Depression is one of the significant problems which some teenage girls nowadays are suffering from and according to study the overuse of social media is the main reason behind this problem. A study shows that more than 75 percent of 14-year-old girls are suffering from low self-esteem, lack of sleep which is ultimately making them depressed. Many of these girls have found to be addictive to their cell phones, and they spend a considerable amount of time surfing through social media which is negatively impacting on their mental health. Researchers think that the problem of overusing social media is high in girls as compared to boys and many issues like bullying on the internet is what’s making them sad and depressed.
In this study, more than 11000 girls were interviewed by the researchers in which it’s found that more than 40 percent of girls were spending more than 5 hours a day on social media. Spending that much amount of time on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp have diminished their productivity due to which most of them go through depression. Researchers did not expect that much amount of addiction between girls, and many girls have to face online harassment which ultimately makes them feel sad. On the other hand, boys are more mentally stronger as compared to girls because the percentage of using social media is less in boys.
This case study proves that social media can be more dangerous than we think and there needs to more awareness about the usability of such things, especially in girls. Sleep deprivation has been found to be the significant side effect of overusing social media. When a person does not get enough amount of sleep, it ultimately makes them feel sad or depressed and such kind of problems are now have become common in girls which is a concerning thing.
